Williamsburg may be known for trendy restaurants and high-end cocktail and wine bars these days, but some of its best nights still happen in places with sticky floors, a jukebox, a pool table, and no particular dress code. From Bedford Avenue institutions to tucked-away East Williamsburg watering holes, the neighborhood has plenty of bars and old-school joints that put character ahead of polish.
This guide rounds up our favorite dive bars in Williamsburg and East Williamsburg. Some are decades-old mainstays, while others are newer bars with the same come-as-you-are attitude. Whether you're after an affordable beer, late-night fried chicken, games, live music, or a dog-friendly backyard, there's a spot here for you. Hours, specials, and activities can change, so check with each venue before heading out.
Lucky Dog
Williamsburg | Best for dogs, cheap drinks, and backyard hangs
📍 303 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Established in 2009
Lucky Dog has the easygoing appeal of a neighborhood bar that doesn't take itself too seriously. The exposed brick interior, shuffleboard, pinball, and rock-leaning jukebox keep things casual, while the backyard is especially popular when the weather cooperates.
As the name suggests, dogs are part of the social scene. Come for a beer with friends, a low-key date, or the chance to meet the neighborhood's four-legged regulars. Expect the energy to rise on busy weekend nights.
The Commodore
Williamsburg | Best for fried chicken and frozen cocktails
📍 366 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Established in 2010
The Commodore occupies the sweet spot between an unfussy dive and a very good place to eat. Its worn-in saloon atmosphere, booths, and back patio make it a reliable meeting point for groups who aren't interested in a formal dinner reservation.
The famous fried chicken with biscuits and honey butter is reason enough to visit, alongside frozen drinks, nachos, and other generous comfort food. Ordering happens at the bar, and finding a seat can take patience when the room is packed.
Maracuja
Williamsburg | Best for pool, strong drinks, and low-key nights
📍 279 Grand St, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Established in 2012, reopened under new owners in 2021.
Maracuja is a dimly lit Grand Street hangout with red-toned lighting, a pool table, and a neighborhood-bar attitude. The room can be laid-back early and much louder later, making it useful whether you're meeting one friend or beginning a longer night out.
Cocktails, frozen drinks, beer, and wine share the menu, with happy-hour specials adding to the draw. Some longtime fans remember the more restaurant-focused version of Maracuja; today, the pool table and casual drinking atmosphere make it a natural fit for this list.
Turkey's Nest
Williamsburg | Best for old-school atmosphere and frozen margaritas
📍 94 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11249
Established in 1981
Turkey's Nest is an old-guard Williamsburg institution that has resisted nearly every neighborhood trend. Its dark, cluttered interior, sports TVs, and distinctly no-frills approach make it feel far removed from the area's high-design cocktail bars.
Large frozen margaritas are the signature order, with beer and straightforward mixed drinks rounding out the options. The bar has long been known for accepting cash, so plan accordingly and check the current policy before visiting.
Metropolitan
Williamsburg | Best for queer nightlife and backyard parties
📍 559 Lorimer St, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Established in 2002
Metropolitan is a longstanding LGBTQ+ neighborhood bar with a divey feel and a much bigger nightlife identity than its modest exterior suggests. Inside are casual drinking spaces and room to dance; outside, the large backyard becomes an especially appealing gathering place in warm weather.
Its programming has included DJs, drag, trivia, karaoke, and seasonal parties. It's a cornerstone of queer Williamsburg nightlife where the atmosphere can shift from relaxed early drinks to a lively evening crowd.
The Gutter
North Williamsburg / Greenpoint | Best for bowling, arcade games, and beers
📍 200 N 14th St, Brooklyn, NY 11249
Established in 2007
The Gutter is more than a dive bar: it's a retro bowling alley and neighborhood nightlife fixture. Vintage lanes, bar seating, and a deliberately unfussy atmosphere make it a great group destination, especially if everyone wants a little activity with their drinks.
The Brooklyn location, which is located right on the border of North Williamsburg and Greenpoint, is also associated with live shows and late-night events, so the evening can extend well beyond a few frames of bowling. It's perfect for birthdays, casual dates, or friends who'd rather do something together than just stand at a crowded bar.
The Levee
Williamsburg | Best for pool, darts, and free cheese balls
📍 212 Berry St, Brooklyn, NY 11249
Established in 2005
The Levee is a textbook Williamsburg dive: dim, friendly, rock-oriented, and set up for an evening that lasts longer than planned. Pool, darts, board games, and a jukebox offer plenty to do while you work through a beer-and-shot special.
The bar's eccentric comfort-food menu includes chili dogs and Frito pies, but the complimentary cheese balls are its most endearing signature. It works especially well for groups that want inexpensive drinks and games without a nightclub crowd.
Alligator Lounge
East Williamsburg | Best for pizza and bar games
📍 600 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Established in 2003
Alligator Lounge is casual, noisy, and full of distractions. Between karaoke, bar games, and its well-known pizza-with-drink tradition, there's more going on than simply ordering another round.
The room draws groups and regulars who value a good deal over immaculate decor. Check the current pizza promotion and karaoke schedule before visiting; its combination of food and entertainment remains the main draw.
George & Jack's Tap Room
Williamsburg | Best for pool and neighborhood regulars
📍 103 Berry St, Brooklyn, NY 11249
Established in 2014
George & Jack's has dim lighting, vintage wall decorations, and straightforward drinks you'd expect from a classic neighborhood tap room. The atmosphere is comfortably lived-in rather than carefully styled.
Pool tables, a jukebox, and popcorn give it an uncomplicated appeal. It's an especially good choice for a traditional Williamsburg dive-bar experience without a themed cocktail menu or special event.
Duff's
South Williamsburg | Best for heavy metal and horror memorabilia
📍 168 Marcy Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Established in 1999
Duff's is a Williamsburg institution for metal fans, decorated with band memorabilia, horror imagery, skulls, and all manner of rock-and-roll excess. It feels less like a themed cocktail bar and more like a room built by people who genuinely love the music.
The soundtrack runs heavy, the drinks are straightforward, and the atmosphere welcomes curious visitors as well as devoted regulars. If your ideal dive-bar night involves loud guitars and an unmistakable personality, Duff's belongs near the top of the list.
Skinny Dennis
Williamsburg | Best for live country music
📍 152 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Established in 2013
Skinny Dennis brings a full honky-tonk atmosphere to Williamsburg, with country music, Americana memorabilia, and a crowd ready to sing along. The room is lively and often packed when musicians are playing.
Its frozen coffee cocktail is a neighborhood signature, and the regular live-music calendar makes it feel more like a community gathering than a themed night out. For fans of country music, it's a standout.
Ontario Bar
Williamsburg | Best for pool, air hockey, and Canadian beers
📍 559 Grand St, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Established in 2009
Ontario Bar is a relaxed Grand Street drinking spot with a fondness for Canadian beer and classic bar games. It's informal and sociable, attracting people who would rather challenge a friend to air hockey or pool than compete for attention at a crowded cocktail counter.
Pinball and a laid-back soundtrack round out the experience. Simple drinks, late hours, and games make Ontario well suited to low-pressure dates and small groups.
The Charleston
Williamsburg | Best for drink specials, pizza, and Skee-Ball
📍 174 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211
The Charleston is a no-frills Bedford Avenue staple with low lighting, bar games, and a casual crowd. Despite the central location, it keeps a dive-bar spirit rather than the feel of a polished destination.
Skee-Ball, drink specials, and its longstanding pizza-with-drinks tradition give it plenty of personality. Check current promotion terms before ordering.
Rocka Rolla
Williamsburg | Best for rock music and a backyard
📍 486 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Established in 2014
Rocka Rolla leans into its vintage rock-and-roll personality, with dark wood, old beer signs, a jukebox, and a lively but unpretentious crowd. A backyard gives people space to spread out when the front bar is busy.
Oversized beers, simple drinks, and pinball make it a favorite for casual group nights. Along with Skinny Dennis and Horses and Divorces, it belongs to a family of Williamsburg bars that celebrate old-fashioned nightlife.
East River Bar
South Williamsburg | Best for a backyard and old-school atmosphere
📍 97 S 6th St, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Established in 2004
East River Bar is a neighborhood dive with exposed brick, worn-in details, a pool table, and an expansive outdoor area. It has the unpolished atmosphere that's increasingly difficult to find near the Williamsburg waterfront.
The building has a colorful past, reportedly including use as a factory and biker clubhouse. Today, it's a good choice for relaxed drinks with friends or a casual evening that doesn't need much planning.
Bushwick Country Club
Williamsburg | Best for backyard mini-golf and dive-bar humor
📍 608 Grand St, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Established in 2005
Despite its name, Bushwick Country Club is in Williamsburg, and it's about as far from an actual country club as a bar can be. The decor is eccentric, the drinks uncomplicated, and the sense of humor proudly scruffy.
A vintage photo booth and backyard mini-golf course have long been part of its appeal, although the venue currently notes the golf course is under construction. Check which activities are available before visiting.
Horses and Divorces
Williamsburg | Best for pool and a central Bedford Ave location
📍 285 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Established in 2018
Horses and Divorces takes the no-nonsense approach of its sister bars Rocka Rolla and Skinny Dennis. A pool table, jukebox, and photo booth give the room plenty of character, but the main draw is the easygoing crowd and uncomplicated bar experience.
Right on Bedford Avenue, it's a convenient stop before dinner, after a show, or midway through a neighborhood bar crawl. The atmosphere is lively without feeling as carefully curated as many of the bars surrounding it.
Dolly’s Swing and Dive
Williamsburg | Best for retro dive styling and happy hour
📍 146 Wythe Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11249
Established in 2019; relocated in 2026
Dolly's blends a relaxed dive-bar attitude with vintage details and a nod to Dolly Parton. Retro styling and comfortable seating make it a welcoming stop for friends or a casual first date.
Originally opened in 2019, Dolly's relocated from Kent Avenue to Wythe Avenue in January 2026, then reopened October 9 after a temporary closure. The current location begins another chapter for the neighborhood bar, with regular daytime hours and a weekday happy hour.
